About the Role
You would support people with learning disabilities and/or mental health challenges to have control over and choice about their lives and to contribute to the community as equal citizens.
You must demonstrate the right attitude to support people with learning difficulties and mental health challenges. We would prefer people with experience in a paid or voluntary capacity, but the right attitude is more important.
Get to know the people (i.e. people supported), what’s important to them and how they want to be supported so that they are in control of the support they get to maintain and develop skills with personal care, participation in day to day activities, health and well-being, education and employment
Ensure people are treated with dignity and respect at all times and their confidentiality is maintained
Give people information, in ways they can understand, so they can make decisions and be encouraged to have dreams and aspirations
Enable people to have a voice and be heard, whether they can speak or not and act on what they communicate
Help people to learn new things (if they want to) and work out what they could do (which might not have been done before) safely. Support them to take planned risks in their lives.
Teach people skills as part of a planned and structured skills teaching programme
Contribute to developing person centred plans for each person and to put these plans into action
Enable people to be a part of the community by supporting people to access appropriate services (leisure, health, work etc.)
Be professional when talking to friends, family and representatives from other organisations
Keep people supported to be safe and free from exploitation by ensuring that all regulators’ policies and procedures are adhered to at all times
Keep records and paperwork up to date and accurate. Keep electronic records and paperwork up to date and accurate
Receive regular, one to one supervision and an annual appraisal and undertake training as needed to meet the organisation requirements and other standards
Participate in team meetings, team days and any reviews as necessary
Drive vehicles of people we support and the service, where needed

A person-centred approach to working is essential. You must be adequately IT literate to be able to use the internet and to use emails for work related communication.
Minimum qualifications and skills
Communicate effectively and accurately in all situations, both verbally and in writing and have good IT & numeracy skills
Keen to learn & develop
Commitment to providing a quality service and be a positive role model to people
Numerate and literate in order to handle money and medication
